And it only hurts when you cry,
I'm alone inside, when there's tears in your eyes,
I can't hide and say I'm fine,
But it only hurts, when you cry.
-Vertical Horizon; When You Cry
Harry and Ginny jumped apart as the door banged open behind them.
Harry was dimly aware of Ron saying something, but it didn’t matter, really. All that mattered was Ginny, the girl of his dreams, but the only one he couldn’t have. Ron’s intrusion on his shining moment of peace brought back all the reasons for ending things with Ginny, all the reasons he couldn’t love her. He’d thought he could do it, that he could forget about her… But he didn’t want to forget her…
All those stolen moments with her had seemed unreal, like something from someone else’s life… And they had been. They had belonged to Harry Potter, not The-Boy-Who-Lived, not The Chosen One.
Ginny had turned away from him, and he could tell that she was crying. He hated it when she cried, hated the fact that sobs shook her small body, and he couldn’t help her. He hated that this time, she cried for him. The pain she felt was his fault.
All His fault.
He felt so alone when she cried, so small and insignificant. He could tell himself that things didn’t bother him, but he couldn’t hide it when she cried, not even from himself.
It hurt him when there were tears in her eyes, hurt him more than any curse could, because he still loved her, and that was that.
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
Ginny dimly registered that the door closed behind her, and she hugged herself, angrily wiping the tears out of her eyes. But it was no use. She collapsed onto her bed, soaking her pillow with her tears, sobs making her body shake.
After what seemed like forever, she sat up, hiccupping herself into silence. She hated to cry, hated that she couldn’t control it. Most of all, she hated to cry in front of him. Harry Potter. The only boy she’d ever really loved, but the only one she could never have.
She couldn’t love him, she had to forget…
Oh, but she did love him, she couldn’t deny it. Even the fact that she cried over him proved it.
But she was determined to hate him, for keeping her locked away like a little girl, while he went off to be a hero.
Ginny clutched her pillow, feeling worse than she had ever felt before, and all she wanted was Harry. She wanted him to comfort her, to feel his strong arms tight around her… To tell her everything was okay, and for him to promise to come back to her, that he wouldn’t give up…
And it hurt her to see him cry, hurt her more than any curse could, because she still loved him, and that was that.
